What is the Student Success Leadership Institute?

The Student Success Leadership Institute is a project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation that brings together teams of 8 to 10 members from all 23 participating community colleges to achieve the goals and outcomes listed below.

SSLI Key Goals and Outcomes

  • Implementation of structured pathways reforms
  • Adoption of institutional policies and practices that meet the needs of students
  • Development of a cadre of leaders engaged in transformational change
  • Stronger campus completion plans
  • Increase in the course completion rate and student success points

The OACC and the colleges are assisted in these efforts by a large team of state and national partners, including the Community College Research Center, Jobs for the Future, Public Agenda, the National Center for Inquiry & Improvement, the Ohio Department of Higher Education, and the Ohio Completion by Design (CbD) cadre.

 Overview of SSLI Meetings and Services

  • SSLI meetings and support first began in 2016 (six meetings were held in 2016)
  • Funding is secured to continue SSLI meetings and support in 2017 (three meetings are planned for 2017)
  • Data Coaching and Technical Assistance (TA) resources and visits are provided to all colleges
  • Meetings and support services are aligned with campus completion plan submitted to the Ohio Department of Higher Education and ongoing updates provided by ODHE
  • Presentations from national experts at SSLI meetings on guided pathways redesign, funding model, advising redesign, transfer best practices,
  • Exchange of ideas with peer colleges and colleagues
  • Focused on guided pathways and the CbD principles and learning processes within the performance-based funding environment
  • 3 colleges (Lorain County Community College, Sinclair Community College, and Stark State College) are participating by offering CbD experts to serve as coaches to the 20 colleges

2017 SSLI Meetings

The Ohio Student Success Center is hosting three Student Success Leadership Institutes in 2017.  These institutes will involve all 23 Ohio community colleges, along with multiple national and state partners.  These institutes will focus on helping the colleges with guided pathways design and implementation.  Each institute will unique topics of interest that all relate to guided pathways design and implementation.

2017 SSLI Dates and Locations

  • February 9, 2017 – Columbus State Community College
  • April 27, 2017 – Clark State Community College (Location changed from Columbus State Community College)
  • September 15, 2017 – Columbus State Community College

2017 Regional SSLI Workshops

In addition to the main SSLI Workshops, the Ohio Student Success Center is also working with community colleges and state/national partners to host Regional SSLI Workshops that focus on particular topics of interest for guided pathways design and implementation.  Please see below forthe latest information of SSLI Regional Workshops
