Forging Ahead: Faculty Leadership in Ohio’s Guided Pathways
October 2023

Hundreds of colleges nationwide are undertaking reforms across the four pillars of the Community College Research Center’s guided pathways model, which reduces costly complexity and streamlines students’ experience through structured choices, targeted support and clearer learning outcomes to improve completion, transfer success and competitive employment outcomes. While some were already engaged in foundational reforms, Ohio’s community colleges committed to scaling guided pathways in 2016 with the support of OACC’s Success Center. The colleges doubled implementation between 2018-2022 and have adopted Jobs for the Future’s Guided Career Pathways model, with its more explicit focus on economic mobility and equity, to shape the next phase of pathways innovation in Ohio.

Strategic engagement of faculty—higher education’s biggest lever for impact—is vital to the successful scaling of guided pathways to benefit all students. Yet, the extent to which faculty are brought in to the reform process—at stages where they can offer consequential input—varies among colleges and leaders in the guided pathways and student success movement. Colleges must develop an intentional plan for faculty engagement.

Developing Successful Dual Enrollment Models at Ohio’s Community Colleges

The Success Center for Ohio Community Colleges developed this series of case studies to highlight strong CCP models that represent a sampling of the good work underway in college-K12 partnerships across the state. The case studies illuminate what it takes to develop, launch and grow a CCP initiative—and how to adapt to changing circumstances.

The five colleges featured are geographically diverse and represent both urban and rural communities. Collectively, they serve thousands of CCP students of all backgrounds, abilities and interests—and those students are succeeding in their college-level courses. With transformative impact on students and communities, these colleges’ CCP programs are helping students to:

  • Chart a path to a college degree and rewarding career;
  • Develop in-demand skills;
  • Pass college-level courses, boosting their academic confidence and resiliency;
  • Earn college credits, helping them achieve a certificate or degree faster and at lower cost;
  • Enroll in college at high rates—often at the college that delivered their CCP coursework; and
  • Make valuable connections with area employers and industry experts.

The CCP models profiled sprang from communities’ recognition of both the need to better equip more students to succeed and the opportunity CCP presents to change the paradigm for college and career preparation. In these communities, earlier access to college-level coursework, combined with strong support, is changing students’ perceptions about their readiness and ability to succeed in college—and thereby changing life trajectories.

More so than ever before, technology is essential to student learning and supporting students across the Ohio community colleges. Across these past semesters, our institutions rapidly mobilized to engage students, faculty, and staff in a remote environment. Through a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded effort and with our partner The Ada Center, we have an opportunity to reflect and learn from how students experienced this virtualization of our Guided Pathways work.

Across the summer of 2020, The Ada Center conducted student interviews at 5 OACC institutions to examine how students experience critical technologies and communications. The goal of these interviews was to help OACC institutions better understand the technology-related activities, features, and capabilities most important for student engagement and learning. Findings from these conversations were presented in this webinar on November 12, 2020.

Session:  Welcome & Ohio Community College Advisors Survey Update
Presenters: Dr. Desiree Polk-Bland, Vice President of Student Affairs, Columbus State Community Colleges; Dr. Diana Wisse, Executive Director of Student Affairs, Columbus State Community College; and Anne Foster, Director of Institutional Effectiveness, Ohio Association of Community Colleges
Description: Columbus State and the OACC teamed up in 2017 to conduct a survey capturing information about the advising environment prior to our efforts to shift to a holistic approach. Results from the 2020 repeat of the survey will be shared to learn about the challenges and opportunities in this work, as well as measuring how far we have come in the move to holistic support.

Presenters:  Dr. Cynthia Olivo, Assistant Superintendent & VP of Student Services, Pasadena City College
Description:  Recently, in the national Black Minds Matter online course, Dr. J. Luke Wood and Dr. Gloria Ladson Billings described this time as an opportunity to reimagine and reset higher education so that we do not go back to “normal” as “normal” is what got us here to this painful place.  How do we, as practitioners co-create new ways to respond to our Student’s needs in a holistic manner?  How do we partner with Instruction to ensure the entire college is helping students succeed in the time of COVID and the racial pandemics? The keynote session will provide an overview of how one college with a predominantly White Institutional history and identity transformed to center racial equity and in doing so is one of the top community colleges in the country awarding degrees to students from minoritized backgrounds.

First, the Ada Center will share their analysis from student interviews conducted at 5 OACC institutions to examine how students experience critical technologies and communication to help colleges better understand the technology-related activities, features, and capabilities most important for student engagement. Then, Trellis will present the findings from the responses of more than 9,500 Ohio community colleges students from a survey conducted in fall 2019. The presenters will connect the dots from these findings to how Ohio colleges can leverage the information to inform college priorities and optimize strategies for providing targeted support for student success.

This is a 3-part webinar series on Advancing Equity Through Guided Pathways, facilitated by Dr. Rob Johnstone and Priyadarshini Chaplot of the National Center for Inquiry and Improvement (NCII). During each session, they will work through NCII’s recently released suite of briefs and practical discussion guides covering various intersections of equity and guided pathways (click here to see the series). See below for session recordings and resources.

Session 1

August 6, 2020 | Rob & Priya provided an overview of the guides and an exploration of the self-assessment in Guide 1.

Session 2

September 11, 2020 | Rob & Priya reviewed Guides 2-4 on culture and leadership.
NCII Leadership for Equity Panel Discussion Video

Session 3

October 9, 2020, 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM | Rob & Priya reviewed Guides 5-11 on the student experience.

Early focus groups can provide valuable insights about the student experience and help identify areas of reform that would improve student success. Using a case-study approach from Lorain County Community College (LCCC), Erika Fenik, Director of Institutional Planning and Engagement, discussed how the launch of student success strategies at LCCC were informed by internal data, national research, and the student voice. While LCCC has been collecting the student voice via surveys for decades, shifting to a more comprehensive and strategic collection of feedback has taken priority in the past two years. During this session, Erika shared the tactical details of identifying the pockets of need, collecting the student voice, sharing back the findings in a way that supports action.

The webinar bridges theory to practice in equity-minded teaching. Presenters from the USC Center for Urban Education provided a conceptual understanding of equity-minded practice and shared examples of tangible teaching strategies that can be applied to in-person and online teaching.

COVID-19 has thrown our world into chaos and crisis. However, it has also opened up new opportunities and different perspectives that lend to the work Ohio colleges are undertaking with scaling guided pathways reforms. During this webinar, participants heard from Hana Lahr, Davis Jenkins, and Serena Klempin from the Community College Research Center (CCRC) and Stark State College on how to leverage current circumstances to help sustain college momentum with scaling guided pathways.

From the difficulties of remote collaboration, to the “crisis fatigue” that people are beginning to experience, student success leaders at every level are challenged in new ways to support healthy, high-functioning teams amid ongoing uncertainty. In this virtual clinic led by Alison Kadlec of SOVA, participants were provided with tools and tips aimed at strengthening team and teamwork in a time of social distancing.

Resources from Webinar:

Survey results from Ohio community college students in Fall 2019 demonstrated the tenuous financial situation faced by many. Kasey Klepfer from Trellis Research presented findings from the Fall 2019 Student Financial Wellness survey to aid colleges as they identify priorities and strategies to assist students in this pandemic environment. In addition, MDRC researchers, Evan Weissman and Julia Schmidt, discussed lessons to help institutions distribute emergency aid promptly, equitably, and to the students who may benefit the most.

Resources from Webinar:

Participants heard from MDRC on applying communication strategies from the Encouraging Additional Summer Enrollment project (EASE) to fall enrollment in the wake of the pandemic.

This webinar provided an introduction to Open Educational Resources (OER) and explained how they can have a substantial impact not only on the total cost of college, but on student success. The presenters explored the engaged pedagogies that are catalyzed by open education, and linked “open” to larger questions about how community colleges serve the publics that support and depend on them.

Resources shared in the chat:

This webinar is facilitated by national expert, Sara Goldrick-Rab, founder of the Hope Center for College Community and Justice in Philadelphia and Professor of Higher Education and Sociology at Temple University. Participants will learn how to support students with resources – such as the emergency aid funding provided by the CARES Act – during this time of crisis and high uncertainty.

Being a faculty member, administrator, or student services professional at a community college is always a demanding job, but the last month or so has been particularly challenging. As the global pandemic has altered the daily lives of most Americans, community colleges have had to adjust in order to continue delivering education in a context that feels both unstable and unfamiliar. Because many of our learners were precarious even before this virus struck, there are significant issues of basic needs (food, housing, health care, child care) that have suddenly become even more urgent and even more of an obstacle to learning. In this presentation, national expert Robin DeRosa will examine the Higher Ed landscape during COVID-19, and offer a pedagogical, community-based framework for navigating the pandemic with care. She will consider how Open Education and the public missions of our community colleges can guide us toward a future educational ecosystem that is healthy, accessible, and sensibly focused on the public good.
