Culturally Responsive Advising Webinar

Facilitated by Dr. Nichelle Bowes, Dean of Student Affairs, Relay Graduate School of Education, this webinar is designed to introduce REACHES, a culturally responsive academic advisement model. that helps to develop skills and widen perspectives for advising students at community colleges who do not identify as cis-gendered, white, male, Christian, able bodied, economically advantaged and/or gender conforming. The presentation will introduce a framework for culturally responsive academic advisement that outlines effective strategies and skills to execute inclusive and responsive advisement. Presenters will model the thought processes involved in implementing the model and provide space for participants to do the same. Additionally, participants will be introduced to criteria for advisement that can be particularly impactful when advising across lines of racial difference. The practices and perspectives shared in this session can be pivotal for effectively advising students of color in higher education.

Please note that there is required pre-work for the webinar, which includes a survey and brief video and should take no more than 30 minutes of your time. The pre-work will be shared with registrants starting in April.

Additionally, the target audience for this webinar is advising staff and frontline student services staff; however, any interested Ohio community college personnel are welcome to join.
